Indicators of Communities

How does one identify the boundaries of a community? What must be maintained among like-minded individuals in order to retain their community status? What degree of difference within a community is tolerable?

Suppose an observational scientonomist is reconstructing the mosaic of a certain epistemic community. In order to recreate the mosaic, the observational scientonomist should know the authority delegation relations of that community. In practice, this would require them to delineate the boundaries of different epistemic communities. In addition, given that communities often tolerate disagreement among their members, to a certain extent, identifying the boundaries of a community is an important task. How can a scientonomist determine where the boundaries of a community are? How much disagreement can there be in a community?
